The Marx Brothers bring their trademark brand of slapstick and wit to the small country of Freedonia, on the brink of bankruptcy until wealthy widow Mrs. Teasdale contributes $20 million to install her suitor, Rufus Firefly, as the leader. But competing affections for Mrs. Teasdale lead to war with the neighboring Sylvania, and two clueless spies are caught in the middle.
